Overview

Leather Oil Dye is a penetrating colouring system developed primarily for vegetable-tanned leather. Unlike paint-style colourants that remain on the surface, the oil-based dye absorbs into the leather fibres and enhances the natural grain and character of the hide.

It provides strong colour saturation and an even tone while helping the leather remain soft, flexible and natural in feel. The dye is suited to new leathercraft projects and restoration work where the original texture and suppleness must be preserved.

How to Use

Preparation

1. Ensure the leather is clean, dry and free from waxes, oils and existing finishes.
2. For previously treated leather, use a suitable deglazer to open the grain.
3. Test the colour on a hidden area or a piece of matching scrap leather.

Application

1. Shake well before use.
2. Apply with a sponge, cloth, wool dauber or spray equipment.
3. Work in smooth, even strokes.
4. Allow the dye to penetrate the leather.
5. Build colour gradually with additional coats.
6. Allow every coat to dry completely before applying the next.

After dyeing

1. Once fully dry, buff gently with a clean cloth to remove excess pigment.
2. Apply a suitable leather conditioner or finish to nourish the leather and protect the colour.
3. Allow the completed leather to cure before use.
